Where these defaults come from

265 wpm — the canonical adult silent-reading speed

Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 silent-reading studies pinned the average adult silent reading speed at ~238 wpm for non-fiction, ~260 wpm for fiction, and 265 wpm overall — the number we ship as the default. The older 200/240 wpm rule-of-thumb was based on a much smaller sample.

150 wpm — conversational speaking speed

The audiobook industry standard is 150–160 wpm. Podcast hosts trend slightly faster (165–175). News anchors clock 175–180. We default to 150 because that's the speed where everyone — including non-native English listeners — keeps up cleanly.

Adjust both sliders

If you write for a more technical audience (slower) or a fast-skim social audience (faster), nudge the reading speed slider. Same for speaking — pace it for the audience, not the writer.
